Inhale your Kitchen!

Your kitchen is has abundant resources. Things that we use in our day to day life, for cooking, garnishing, drinking, they all have certain capabilities that we are in a way aware of. Lets say cucumber which makes an excellent snack as well as a face pack or turmeric which apart from adding color to the curry, als ahas antiseptic properties which have been used for years to heal from within. There still are many inherent properties that we are not aware of. One of them is the aroma of the fruits, spices, vegetables around us and their direct impact in uplifting our moods. So while you enter your kitchen for the first glass of water in the morning, reach out for everyday things that can uplift your mood.

Apple

As you cut open an apple while you have your breakfast, deeply inhale the fresh aroma. Same goes with oranges. The citrus flavor of these fruits will jump start your day once you inhale them and devour it. Active ingredients such as cirtal and limonene in oranges, grapefruits and lemons also refresh your mind. You can even add a slice of either of the fruits to a glass of water to keep sipping through the day.

Ginger

Ginger has been known for its medicinal properties. For digestive problems, cut ginger in thin strips and add to water(room temperature), you can even boil it and make some ginger-lemon tea. Ginger when eaten raw with ginger as pickle also aids digestion. Now coming to its aromatic powers. When feeling low, stressed out and tired, just the whiff of this root can elevate your senses, energizing you almost instantly. It is both fiery and fortifying and is effective against nausea.

Basil

Hoil basil (tulsi) is called the mother medicine of nature. Just add it to tea for that cold and running nose or have chopped tomatoes seasoned with basil on that pasta for that nice cosy feeling. The methyl chavicol in basil acts as a nerve tonic. Tulsi is also said to have properties that increase concentration and memory.

Cinnamon

The pungent aroma of cinnamon is unmistakable, usually evoking dreams of hot cinnamon rolls from the oven. Cinnamon prevents nervous tension, improves complexion and memory. A pinch of cinnamon powder mixed with honey does the trick if taken regularly every night for these purposes. Just the fragrance of it will make you alert and take away exhaustion. What more if you apply cinnamon oil, it will keep insects at bay. If taken regularly after child birth, it acts as a natural birth control. If taken half a teaspoon daily, it lowers LDL cholesterol. A warm and stimulating feeling passes over you when you sniff cinnamon. Brew with tulsi for some nice, heart-warming chai.

Coffee beans

The aroma is not only a wake-up call on lazy mornings, it also cures olfactory fatigue. This is why store attendants make you smell coffee beans while trying out different fragrances. If the heady smell of onions or garlic is overpowering you, clear your head by just putting your nose to the coffee jar. Best for those suffering from nausea and morning sickness.

Tea

In contrast with coffee, tea leaves spread peace and calm over you. Brew a cup of green tea to help a heavy meal go down.

Cardamom

The terpinyl acetate and cineol are responsible for the sweet, spicy fragrance that warms you and invigorates your mind. You are suddenly so alert with the aroma of hot biryani.

Clove

The eugenol and eugenyl acetate stimulates the mind and energises it. It acts as a soothing agent for colds, flu and fatigue. Make a tiny pillow stuffed with clove and cinnamon to help clear your nasal congestion. Clove oil is also known to soothe tooth aches… To Read More Click Here

Akki meets his match in Kane

Bollywood’s khiladi No. 1 Akshay Kumar met a bigger khiladi — in size, at least — in his Mumbai home yesterday morning. WWE superstar Kane, an idol of Akki’s son Aarav, visited the actor’s family, and the six-year-old was almost sleepless the night before, overcome with excitement.

Kane turned up in jeans and a white shirt, looking most unlike The Big Red Monster he is in the wrestling arena. Only his size, 323 pounds, and imposing height, 7 feet, set him apart. Akshay wore a long-sleeved T-shirt. “I told him to cover up because he’d never be able to compete with Kane,” said wife Twinkle. Akki later changed into jeans and a white shirt, too, so they would be perfectly matched. Incidentally, they are both 42. Kane was born in April 1967. Akshay was born in September. Plus, they share a liking for Jackie Chan.

While in Delhi, Kane had expressed his admiration for Akshay. “I believe he’s the Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarznegger of India,” he said to HT City. The actor was no less impressed by his guest. Before Kane arrived, his flight delayed, Akki was on the phone, talking about the ‘chokeslam’, Kane’s signature move.

A nice, big breakfast
The star couple prepared a big meal to welcome him — porridge, bacon and sausage, stuffed omelette, aloo parathas (served as “potato pancakes”), mango, litchi and mango shake. Kane, who loves pizza and generally has a protein shake for breakfast, tucked in happily. “He likes protein shakes, I prefer mango shakes,” grinned Akshay. “He has Myopax, I have ma ka parathas.”

The awestruck kids — Aarav and his little cousin, Twinkle’s sister Rinke’s four-year-old daughter — were waiting patiently for their share of Kane’s attention. But when the time came to tackle the man mountain, they took fright.

They ran into the next room when Twinkle told Aarav that Kane would chokeslam him. They were not put off wrestling, though. The sounds coming from the other room convinced their parents that they were recreating a ring inside. A long while later, Akshay’s secretary Zenobia emerged, all ruffled. She admitted to being tortured. Kane was amused. “When my wife’s daughters were young they, too, thought I was neat,” he recalled with a smile. Not so scary, after all...Click Here To Read MoreDo Visit www.monadarling.com/vibes

Danny Boyle: The Messiah!

Danny Boyle is intoxicated! With the success of his film Slumdog Millionaire, he is finding it hard to let go of Mumbai. He has proclaimed about his love for the city earlier too, but now he is helping with all that he can to help two Indian filmmakers complete their dream projects about this city of dreams!

Shekar Kapur’s Paani and Anurag Kashyap’s unnamed project, both are getting produced by Danny Boyle. Danny has earlier helped Anurag Kashyap with Dev D’s shoot in London; in fact he even helped Anurag buy a camera for the shoot.

Kapur’s long pending project Paani has finally set to roll. The film was stuck due to financial constraints and when Shekhar discussed the subject in detail, Danny could not resist the desire to produce the film.

No points for guessing the subject of the films. While Shekhar Kapur’s Paani is a futuristic film about the scarcity of water in Mumbai, Anurag Kashyap does not want to divulge the theme of his movie as yet. Danny in the meanwhile is busy playing messiah to both; the two movies were stuck due to financial constraints.

Apart from these two, the Oscar-winner filmmaker is also turning another novel into a film. This time it is the critically acclaimed– Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found by Suketu Mehta. Danny has already bought the rights of the book and this travelogue cum autobiography which delves into the interconnected worlds of Mumbai’s slum-dwellers, dancing girls, underworld dons and Hindu radicals. This could be another biggie by Boyle. Click Here To Read More

All You Need To Know About Pre Paid Credit Cards

When you do not have a credit history or the bad credit report is proving a big hassle to get a fair credit card, you could try a prepaid credit card.

With a bad credit rating, one could face regular rejections at various credit companies. Now I’m sure you are very aware of the benefits that a credit card provides. Right from hotel reservations, car rentals, airline flights, emergencies to even groceries. The only hitch is that one needs to make monthly payments in time, or else the risk of going negative in credit would always be around. With prepaid credit card although you would not have to bother about all this, however, there are a lot of limitations.

What is a Prepaid Credit card?

To open a prepaid credit card, one just needs to make a deposit in the account like in a checking or savings account. Once this amount registers on the account, the applicant receives a prepaid credit card. The card can be used in the same way as the normal credit card.

Advantage

The biggest advantage is that one can only use the money that one really has in the account, so no problem of going overboard when it comes to spending. Once the money is exhausted, the user cannot spend any more until he or she replenishes the prepaid credit card account. Also there are no bills, or interest charges. The principle is similar to that of using a debit card that a bank issues in connection with a savings or checking account.

The biggest advantage is that it’s very secure when it comes to identity theft. Your social security number is not connected to a prepaid credit card; you simply load it with cash and use only what you have on it. If someone finds your lost card, they can’t use it to follow any paper trail to your vital information. However, if you want to be able to live without your social security number being a big red target for thieves, you can use prepaid credit cards to do so.

Limitations

So now that you can only use what you have in your account, you’ll have to pay a fee to establish an account. Although the fee amount varies from bank to bank, this generally varies from $5 to $20. Also every time you pay additional fees every time more cash in your account. Another limitation of a prepaid credit card is that the owner cannot use it to pay for a monthly Internet subscription, or to make a purchase on monthly installment payment terms. Businesses that offer such arrangements are usually averse to allowing the use of prepaid credit cards. This is because of the possibility that a prepaid credit card holder will have no money in the account when the bills are due for payment. These cards will not help in building any credit history whatsoever.

All said and done, a prepaid credit card is still a useful way out for those with bad credit ratings. It is a fact that one needs a credit card to get by in today’s world, and a prepaid credit card does offer most of the advantages of a credit card. Even the limitations can work to one’s advantages, because they equal better financial control. In fact, using a prepaid credit card often cures all the inconsistencies in spending habits that lead to bad credit rating in the first place!

A variant of the prepaid credit card is the student version. With these one can allocate a certain amount of money for credit charging to one’s child who is studying at college within or outside the country. Many parents find it a very useful tool for allocating a pre-set allowance to their children.

Naveen Andrews : Sexiest Survivalist

Naveen Andrews Sexiest Survivalist

British actor Naveen Andrews first attracted international attention as Kip, Juliette Binoche's Sikh boyfriend in The English Patient (1996). A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Andrews got his start on television, starring in the popular -- to say nothing of racy -- 1993 miniseries The Buddha of Suburbia. The same year that he appeared in the English patient, the actor portrayed a haughty king in Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, a film whose content inspired no shortage of controversy in India.
He subsequently worked in a variety of films on both sides of the Atlantic, including Blessed Art Thou which had its premiere at the 2000 Sundance Festival. In 1993 this talented actor was nominated by the Evening Standard Drama Awards as Most Promising Newcomer for his part in Wild West. For the BBC's The Buddha of Suburbia, he was nominated for Best Actor at the San Remo Film Festival

PERSONAL LIFE:
At the age of 16, whilst at Emanuel School he fell in love with his mathematics teacher, Geraldine Feakins, with whom he had a son, Jaisal, born in 1992. Andrews was quoted in an interview later on saying that "his father would call him a prostitute" albeit being famous at his school "for going out with a math’s teacher".

Andrews is now in a relationship with actress Barbara Hershey, who is 21 years his senior, and they live in Los Angeles. The couple separated briefly in 2005 and, during that time, Andrews had a son, Naveen Joshua, with another woman, Elena Eustache. He and Hershey later reconciled.
Naveen has had a thing for older women from the beginning, "Older women know who they are, and that makes them more beautiful than younger ones. I like to see a face with some character. I want to see lines. I want to see wrinkles."

NAVEEN ANDREWS ON HIS ADDICTION:
Andrews is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. While he was building his acting career in London, Andrews developed a strong affinity towards drugs and alcohol. His addictions threatened to destroy his budding career, and so he had no other choice but to seek rehabilitation. Andrews was forced to move across the Atlantic to America to seek rehabilitation and get his life back on track. His efforts were successful fortunately, he was able to overcome his addictions, but claimed that London invokes many agonizing reminders of his past lifestyle. Lost star Naveen Andrews has revealed how a drug addiction ruined his life for two years. The actor said: "There was a danger of me copping it… I lost two years to heroin."I was able to work; I don't know how I did it. You can take incredible abuse and still work… I collapsed on a job because of booze."Andrews also reveals how he was warned of his behaviour while filming The English Patient.
"The turning point was I drove my son when I was drunk and he was scared, and that's when I decided to go into rehab in LA," he said. Looking back he says, Let's just say I was really bad. Now I have grown into myself. I have changed.”

ON LOST:
This talented actor with the expressive eyes has continued to work steadily through out his career, and gained a role in the popular television series "Lost". In 2004, Andrews was cast as Sayid Jarrah on Lost, though he first thought that the initial premise was "limited at best and dreadful at worst." People crashing on an island - how many possible permutations can you get out of that?" However, the character quickly became a fan favorite. In 2006 he was voted one of People Magazine's "World's Most Beautiful People". He was also voted Sexiest Survivalist in 2005 by People Magazine.
Naveen has been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role in "Lost" and has earned much praise from critics.
Andrews is one of the more outspoken members of the cast in regards to the show itself. He has not been afraid to criticize the show, especially in regards to Season 3 stating his belief that without an end date, the producers had to stretch out the story because they didn't know how many episodes they would have, due to the culture of program production in the United States. He believes that this reduced the quality during that season on the potential short life-span of characters on "Lost", Andrew says, "I think we all had that as a concern. That monster there is like a producer's dream, isn't it? Any one of us could get bumped off at any time and we're all aware of it. It keeps you on your toes."
Andrew also plays the guitar and sings.” I’ve been playing the guitar since I was twelve. If I had any other job apart from acting, that’s probably what I would have done.” Click Here To Read More

Renounce Life and Attain Bliss Bhagavad Gita – Synopsis of chapters 4 to 6

As we saw in Chapter 3, Lord Krishna advices Arjuna to fight in full knowledge of the Supreme. In the 4th chapter he moves on to explain what this transcendental knowledge is.

If sacrifice of one’s material possessions is not directed towards spiritual realization, then such sacrifice becomes simply material. But one who performs such sacrifices with a purely spiritual objective, or in devotional service, that is perfect sacrifice.

Krishna glorifies transcendental knowledge and requests Arjuna to arm himself with this knowledge which burns all sinful reactions to ashes and fight. Arjuna is confused; he asks the Lord whether the renunciation of work or work in devotion is superior.

One who neither hates nor desires the fruits of his activities is known to be always renounced. Thus, outwardly performing all actions but inwardly renouncing their fruits, wise men, purified by the fire of transcendental knowledge, attain peace, detachment, forbearance, spiritual vision & bliss.

The Lord proceeds to explain how one can detach himself from the fruits of his activities. He states that when one stands fast in Krishna consciousness, and neither grieves nor rejoices upon achieving something unpleasant or pleasant reaches the transcendental stage. One should abandon all material desires and engage his body, mind & soul in the service of Lord. The mind is most difficult to control and one has to conquer it otherwise lust, anger, avarice and illusion deviate him. He further explains that controlling ones mind is possible through the practice of yoga, with firm faith & determination.

In order to practice yoga one has to sit in a secluded place and meditate on the Paramatma or the Inner soul. One should hold one’s body, neck and head erect and stare steadily at the tip of nose with an un-agitated and subdued mind. One should regulate the habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work, and free oneself from material desires. Like a lamp in the windless place, one has to steadily meditate on the Paramatma with a controlled mind. If the mind wanders, one should bring it back under the control of the self. The natural boundless transcendental pleasure is the highest perfection or ultimate goal of Yoga.

Lord Krishna further states that a person who attains this transcendental knowledge sees everybody as a part and parcel of Krishna. A person who knows Krishna as supreme attains peace from the pangs of material miseries. Click Here To Read More

Everyone has a story to tell..

The Kahani Movement, an oral history project modelled after StoryCorps, was launched at the opening of the seventh annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles April 21st 2009.

The Kahani Movement inspires Indian Americans to tell stories of their early days in the U.S. from the comfort of their own kitchen tables and then share this content on a newly developed social network (http://kahanimovement.com).

This storytelling project is targeted toward the Indian-American and South Asian communities. The Kahani Movement is the brainchild of Suneel Gupta and his brother Sanjay, the chief medical correspondent for CNN.The project takes a unique approach to sharing these stories by motivating young Indian Americans to pick up a camera, interview their parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, and then post that footage to Kahani’s web platform (http://kahanimovement.com).
“Take the time to sit down with the parents, grandparents and get their stories. These are powerful, amazing stories. Everyone can be a filmmaker, everyone can tell stories,” says Suneel Gupta, who has been working on the project for more than one-and-a-half years.

Kahani’s platform allows storytellers to browse through stories submitted by fellow users, and submit their own in the form of video, audio, photos, and writings. With an open-source approach to film production, the Kahani Movement gives the storyteller the ability to not only share his or her stories with a network but also be able to access the content from other participants.

Kahani hopes to continue to inspire generations of Indian-Americans to embrace and document the rich cultural traditions of their ancestors. The purpose of creating the Kahani Movement is three-fold:

1. Assemble a well-organized archive of content that helps current and future generations to better understand the Indian immigration experience.

2. Empower the Kahani Movement community to collaborative creatively. The Kahani Movement inspires community members to add to and remix content on the site to tell the Indian immigration story in new, imaginative ways.

3. Inspire others outside of the Indian community to create their own Kahani Movement. Every community has powerful stories that are worth preserving. An important goal for Kahani is to lower the barrier to capturing these stories by creating a digital model that is easy to replicate…. Read More

Bhaisexuality!

We saw Dil Chahta Hai, the tale of three very well bonded boys, who’d do everything together! In fact years ago Jai-Veeru bond in Sholay or Amar Akbar Anthony and Dostana (old one)– singing ye dosti hum nahi todengay– and also saw men crying inconsolably for one another. These were the times of unadultearted sfriendships, which now in modern backkdrop is being given a new name.– Bhaisexuality!

These celluloid friends are emotionally intimate, sharing a kind of bromance–A romance between two hetrosexual males. Bhaisexual combines the metrosexual – who bonded over hair gels and had relations with both males and females and retrosexual – much like Shahrukh in Don and the angry young man Amitabh in Zanjeer who defines his actions and his relationships. As years pass by dudes are seen in some hot steamy scenes that has added a new term in the dictionary of sexuality.

In Lage Raho Munna Bhai, more than the budding romance between Jahnvi and Munna, it was Munna’s close relation to Circuit. Circuit brought him back to good health, even sung to Munna– a very loyal friend.

Rang De Basanti also had Bhaisexual moments when Aamir and his friends would go shirt less in the fields, and also in the end sacrificed their lives.

Or in Dostana, where John and Abhishek are the kind of friends who don’t shy from being emotionally intimate.

This is an urban phenomenon where men enjoy each other’s company, breaking in a way the tradional masculine barriers…..

Norah Jones- The Jazz Diva

Geethali Shankar, does that name sound familiar? I’m sure Norah Jones does. Born Geetanli Norah Jones Shankar, on March 30, 1979 in Dallas (Texas), Geethali became Norah at the age of sixteen for professional reasons.

Much has been written about the father-daughter relationship. Her father Indian Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar and mother Sue Jones, a dancer, producer and a nurse had a nine year long realtionship, at the end of which Norah was born. They never married, and once Norah was born, they would see each other rarely, until Norah was 18. She finally found peace with her father and the two share a beautiful relationship today. She with her half sister Anoushka, is seen holidaying in India, in Indian clothes, many times.

Her claim to fame: Her debut album Come Away With Me (2002), earned her a record-breaking eight Grammys in 2003, making history as one of the only female vocalists to sweep in five major categories, along with Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill. Since then she has won four more statues, telling the world in less than a decade of her arrival that her sultry jazz style can be mainstream. Along with the gifted spirit that she is, she is rendered smoking hot, and what we have is an extremely talented and fine woman.

Further fleshing out her creative resume, Jones stars in acclaimed director Kar Wai Wong’s My Blueberry Nights (2007), along with Jude Law,Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz. But despite this recent foray into the world of cinema, Jones insists that the movie was an interesting diversion only, and that music will always be her first love.

“Without a piano I don’t know how to stand, don’t know what to do with my hands and the coolest thing about all this is that I get to meet the people that I worship”, says Norah.

Having performed in Willie Nelson & Friends with Sheryl Crow, Jon Bon Jovi and Dave Matthews, she has toured the world from Europe to Japan. Norah Jones has been a guest on The Tonight Show and was featured on VH1. Pieces profiling her unique style have been on CNN and Rolling Stone, along with other big-name magazines that come a-knockin’ when a star is born.

Captivated by New York’s musical vivacity, Jones moved back to her city of birth in 1999 to embark on the life course that would lead to her great success. Jones began playing with numerous artists and bands, but it was by her collaboration with a group of her remarkably talented friends – that she took the world by storm and carved her name into music history….

Bollywood’s Crowning Glories

Beauty and Indian film industry have had a very strong relation from the very outset. Glamor is one thing that attracts both the industries. Wining a beauty pageant in a way becomes stepping stone for the silver screen. Lasses who want to make full use of their new found fame and recognition, often end up being a part of the film industry.

Their beauty crowns win them big banners and good project waiting and willing to pay hefty amounts to act in their films. All this and much more comes their way without any prior experience in acting and many till date have created ripples in the industry. Its not only that these beauty queens end up only in the industry, some take up related stuff like modeling, television, fashion designing, fashion journalism and many more. The taste of popularity doesn’t make them sit idle, very few settle for somthign less glamorous.

Meher Mistry, the first to get the crown of Femina Miss India in the year 1964, did not go to join the Hindi film industry instead she opted fashion writing and modeling to make her career.

There were three scintillating girls who made their way straight after winning the crown to the filmdom. Poonam Dhillon, who won the Miss Young India in 70s at the age of 16, later joined Bollywood bandwagon. Zeenat Aman, started her career as a jouranlist at Femina magazine in Mumbai after completing her studies from Los Angeles, taking over modeling and then Miss Asia Pacific in 1970. She stepped into Bollywood with Roti Kapra Aur Makan opposite Manoj Kumar, but it was Dev Anand, who gave her first hit, Hare Rama Hare Krishna in 1972. Zeenat till date is known for her stunt as a sex symbol in the 70s.

Tina Munim was another damsel, who won the International Teen Princess Award in 70s and was launched by Dev Anand in Des Pardes. All the three ladies hit big in the industry and created a rage in the industry...

Bollywood On Cover

Don’t judge a book by its cover. It holds realistically true for film and fashion magazines where readers are attracted by the unabashed glamor that is right in the face. .Magazine covers were generally clad with models. In an industry where many have made their way through modelling, it’s not shocking to see them on the covers. Today a stars success is also rated by the number of magazine covers he/she has bagged. Leave aside Indian magazines, even international ones like Vogue and L’Official have never looked better.

Hawa Mahal – Palace Of The Winds

Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for is beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal; Mohammed Begda built the Adalaj step-well for Rani Roobha whom he coveted; and Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built the magnificent Hawa Mahal so that the women of the royal palace ‘can see without being seen’. Incredible!

I was standing right in front of the imposing Hawa Mahal craning my neck to see the beautiful structure. Such artistry, grandeur, just so that the royal women can watch what was going on in the streets below them, without being seen? It seemed incredulous, but then so is Taj Mahal.

As known the women in the royal palaces observed strict ‘purdah’, that is they kept away from the public view. Let us accept, they too needed some recreation and this monument was built so that they see the out side world unobserved, what a thought!!

Built in 1799, Hawa Mahal is the most stunning sight in the city of Jaipur. It is shaped like a pyramid and has a staggering 953 small windowpanes and all of them beautifully carved.

As I stood at one of the 900 odd windows and looked down at the road below, I found myself wondering about the women who would stood like me looking down, almost 200 years ago. Were they happy in their confinement? What ever may be the case, hats off to the Maharaja who was so thoughtful and did it in style.

As every one said that it was best to see the Hawa Mahal at the break of dawn, I was there in time to see the Palace drenched in the first rays of the sun. I cannot possibly describe the beauty of the Palace in words. The golden light of the early morning sun floated beautifully through the windows of this palace creating a wonderful sight. The palace has to be visited to experience the true beauty…

Why Sonam Kapoor Couldnot Make It To Cannes?

When Sonam Kapoor became the face of L’Oreal, she was sure excited. What kept the excitement ticking was the fact that she was invited to Cannes Film Festival, walk the red carpet and to join the L’Oreal Paris dream team which includes notable beauties such as Aishwarya Rai, Naomi Lenoir, Penelope Cruz, Andie MacDowell, Laetitia Casta, Kerry Washington, Milla Jovovich, Michelle Yeoh, Beyonce Knowles, Eva Longoria and Scarlett Johansson!

In the meanwhile, she kind of miffed Mrs Bachchan by calling her the face of older women (Aishwarya endorses the anti-aging cream). Sonam could not have even dreamt of what followed next– she was asked not to go to Cannes.

Now how could Aishwarya be a party to this? L’oreal even came out with a press release which cleared Aishwarya of any controversies and said, “We do not want to take part in or encourage any controversy involving our spokespeople. There were adverse reports in certain sections of media after some comments by Sonam Kapoor, which were presented out of context.

“Following this, in order to avoid further escalation, we have advised Sonam not to go to Cannes as was planned earlier, bearing in mind that there would be more interesting opportunities for future appearances in Europe for her.”

Poor Sonam, she had to stay back. On a second thought, why wouldn’t Mrs Bachchan be offended on being called of an older generation. May be she refused to share the red carpet limelight with a much younger star, who could also share her being the representative of India on an international platform.

To top it all, when Aishwarya as a courtesy went to meet Barbara Mori who was staying in the same hotel as her, Barbara just couldn't spare a minute to be with this iconic beauty. What a harsh summer Ash is going through these days!

Wise men say, “ One may understand the cosmos, but never the ego; the self is more distant than any star.”

Yoga for street Kids

The Street Yoga mission gives youth and their caregivers the tools to overcome early life trauma, through the sharing of life-building mindfulness and wellness practices grounded in the ancient healing principles of yoga.

Street Yoga teaches yoga, mindfulness and compassionate communication to youth and families struggling with homelessness, poverty, abuse, addiction, trauma, and neurological and psychiatric issues, so that they can grow stronger, heal from past traumas, and create for themselves a life that is inspired, safe, and joyful.

Street Yoga offers children and families a free, portable means of caring for themsleves that no one can take away. Through the teaching of free yoga, meditation and wellness classes we seek to help homeless youth increase their physical, emotional and spiritual strength, stamina and flexibility so they can better meet their own core needs. We work closely with those service providers striving to help youth secure safe housing, nutritious food, accessible health care, employment, clean clothing, educational choices and human dignity.

Here’s an excerpt from an article by Katie Arrants from the Street Yoga website

Food and Shelter are Not Enough

While many people are immediately supportive of Street Yoga’s work, others initially express skepticism: “Why give yoga to street kids? Why not focus on getting them shelter, food, and jobs?” Unfortunately, comments such as these express a deep misunderstanding not only of our work, but also of what a person needs in order to be a successful member of society with a truly hopeful future.

As an organization we strive to partner with numerous other service providers who are already doing excellent work helping youth meet their most basic needs. If we were ever to observe youth not being appropriately served, we would of course speak up to obtain these services for youth or (as is the case with the Living Foods program, which teaches youth basic menu-planning, healthy food choices, and cooking skills) even provide those services ourselves. However, our focus remains on yoga because by maintaining this as our primary directive, we reinforce the concept that food and shelter are indeed NOT enough for a young person to develop into a whole and productive adult. ..

Sonia Gandhi’s Impeccable Style Mantra

On 28 February 1968, Safdarjung Road in New Delhi was a busy street. It was Vasant Panchami, but that was not the only reason. It was the wedding day of Jawarhalal Nehru’s grandson. Dressed in a pink saree which Nehru himself had spun while in prison(it was the same saree that Indira had worn on her wedding day), Antonia (Sonia )Manio became Sonia Gandhi, daughter-in-law of the First Lady of India, Indira Gandhi and also an intrinsic part of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, a family that had ruled India since 1940s.

This was a cultural makeover for Sonia, not just physical but emotional as well. Slowly she has changed her looks, style and mannerisms which seem to be so much drawn from Indira Gandhi herself. Her hair color deepened from light to dark, nearly black brown. She wore saris reminiscent of Indira’s and took to wearing a man’s large wristwatch, just as Indira had. She once had created an uproar for being photographed in a mini skirt. Now she likes to buy her sarees from Martand Singh and Rajesh Thakur.

Her style is crisp, sharp and desi with Paithani sarees, Cotton, khadi and handloom silks with various weaves. These aress are handpicked from different corners of India. and white cotton kurta sets. Her sarees have a temple or rudraksh borders, ikat weaves, a touch of gold threadwork. Mostly in white, cream, earthy ochres and browns, indigo and deep maroon. Her accessories are very limited; simple elegant pearl strands and earrings. In winters she matches scarves, stoles, subtly printed dupattas and pashmina shawls with sharply tailored jackets and cravat-like sari pallus. Her hair are simple; pinned up, slightly retro-buffant style and those striking kohl eyes…

Of Cricket and Bollywood babes…

Bollywood may have a new found love in cricket, thanks to IPL, but the two have had a common connection– Bollywood beauties and cricket heroes. While some ended up in marriage, others had their own slow death.

Long before Deepika Padukone, Sayali Bhagat, Geeta Basra, Isha Sharvani, Kim Sharma and the like made a bee line for the super smart cricketers, we already had Sharmila Tagore married to Mansoor Ali Khan– The Nawab of Pataudi. Her career was at an all time high when she decided to be with Tiger Pataudi and share rest of his life as his wife. Their kids Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan have both chosen films as a vocation.

Reena Roy and Mohsin Khan’s marriage did not have a happy ending. After his almost negligible stint with Bollywood, the flamboyant cricketer Mohsin Khan’s marriage with Reena Roy ended in a bitter divorce. Reena now lives in Mumbai with her daughter…

What’s Special About Cannes Film Market?

There is an acute famine of Indian films in the competitive section at Cannes but our prodigal filmmakers have not missed any opportunity to showcase their talent at the Marche du film (the film market).

There are a number of Indian films and corporate houses lining up at the market to showcase their path breaking technologies or ties between Bollywood and Hollywood at the same time trying to woo international buyers by screening films at the festival’s market.

But the truth is whether it is a multi Hollywood and Bollywood collaboration in Kambakht Ishq or Hrihtik and Mexican actress Barbara Mori’s romance in Kites, there is no big deal. If even you want to show your home video, you can go and showcase it, till the time you can afford to buy a screening there which comes at a price tag of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,20,000 ($1045 to $2500).

The screenings are basically held at a small preview theatre in Palais du festival which are but local cinemas of the city. Everyone does not have access to these screenings and only those who have the Marche du film badge can attend this

All this happens in the backdrop of .big corporate houses like Reliance Big Pictures, Eros and Serendipity striking multi million dollar deals, developing international co productions.

This year Eros International unveiled Kambakkht Ishq, Reliance – Kites and Serendipity Films will debut Teen Patti. Serendipity Films has also announced an investment of up to $50 million over the next three years to produce international projects that will bring Indian and Western talent together…

“Playwright, Director, Actor the Ingenious Sudipta Bhowmick”

Sudipta Bhawmik, is a well known actor, director and playwright. Having been performing in the Tri-state area since 1989, his plays in Bengali and English have won many awards in India, US and Canada. He has also acted in Mira Nair’s The Namesake.

Sudipta is also a cartoonist, illustrator and blogger. With a Ph.D, M,Tech and Tech degrees from IIT Kharagpur, India.. His recent plays Phera, Kaalsuddhi, Durghatana, BSL, Ron, Satyameva, and Taconic Parkway has received wide appreciation both from the critics as well as audiences. His plays have been published in Kolkata’s prestigious magazines like Bohurupi and SAS. His play, Satyameva has been made into a Telefilm (renamed as Satyasatta for Tara Bangla TV channel in Kolkata) by the famous actor director Chandan Sen. Sudipta has also written a screenplay Charu: Unspoken.

Neha Mahajan caught up with this prolific director to know more about his works and his recent play Banprastha.

NM: You are an IITian, engineer in semiconductors. How come theater and plays became your muse?

SB: I have been doing plays since I was in Kindergarten. Then when I went to college, there is a very active social culture, they are very active in theatre. There is a technology drama society. So we used to do about 2-3 plays per year. There were spring festivals and others too. Our professors used to encourage us . We had humanities as a subject and the English teacher used to really encourage us a lot. When I graduated, I was working in Delhi for sometime and then in Kolkata. My interest in theater had deepened and I joined the Panchamved Charyashram, a theater school founded by Saoli Mitra, her group was called Panchamvedic. I also had the privilege of training under the stalwarts like Sombhu Mitra, Tripti Mitra, Saoli Mitra, Mohit Chattopadhya and others. He also received training from the famous playwright and director Badal Sircar at many of his workshops.

I came to US many years back, and then the first person I didi a play with was Sakti Sengupta of the njisacf. The play Sabdo Moho Bandhne was an abstract play based on various Bengali short stories. From that time on, I have been very actively involved in plays.

NM: You have been writing plays from a very long time. What are the themes that they deal with?

SB: I was not really into serious play writing until say about 2001-2002. The thing is that in US we get very little time to do things that we want to do. There are so many commitments. The extra things that you want to do take a lot of time. I was really very involved in directing and acting in the plays that were staged in Kolkata. We used to do them here. Like plays of Badal Sircar and Rabindranath Tagore. We used to do them here. We were doing them for so many years – the main reason was nostalgia about our homeland and of the people there.

But we could not connect with them. Things are different here. Famous director Ashok Mukherjee was doing a play here in US and I was acting in it. We were talking and ended up discussing about the plays we do here and how we who reside here in India cannot connect to them. They don’t seem relevant.

He told me that you’ll have to do plays that are relevant here. That was a turning point. His words got me thinking. Since then I started writing plays that reflected out state here.

I wrote my first play Phera in 2003. I received overwhelming response. It was just my first play and people came up to me and told me that they were touched. Some people had tears in their eyes. They could so well relate with the story.

If you look at books of Jhumpa Lahiri, you could see a connection. My plays are quite in similar strain.

Phera was happening in India, backdrop wise. But it is about a boy who came from US to India but his family was not happy and wanted him to go back. They were so given in to luxuries from the money that he used to send. When it was staged for the first time at North American Bengali conference, the hall of 2500 people was full and there was pin drop silence.

Another play like Kaalshuddhi (Redemption) is about a father who was part of Naxalite movement and his grown up son one day finds out and starts questioning him. The father had a guilt in his heart of having been a traitor to his own group. Similarly Durghatna was a monologue…

Think Victory

‘We are what we think. All that

we are arises with our thoughts. With

our thoughts, we make the world.’

Most of us have been taught to base our self worth on accomplishments, skills, our physical appearance, financial success and so on. So when we are suddenly knocked by life – lose our jobs, or a relationship we are dependent on, our self-confidence is challenged. Not good enough, whispers that voice in most of us. How do we quell it and allow the strength to take our instead? Our self-esteemed and self-image are developed by how we talk to ourselves. Everyone has an inner critic and if we let it take the upper hand, it will would your sense of self and make it harder for you to feel competent and happy in the world.

We live in times of great change and the only way we can move through this easily is by thinking constructively.

While your self-regard may be influenced by you interaction to others and your experiences in the world, in the final analysis, it’s in your hands. Ditch That Bottled Water!

June 5 every year is marked for the World Environment Day. Every year tonnes of pledges and millions of agendas are spoken about. Many goals have been reached, but it is still miles to go before I sleep.

Your Planet needs you– Unite to combat climate change.

This year pledge to stop using bottled water, at least start trying. I see families completely relying on bottled water. Today having a bottled water in hand is a symbol of prestige than need and is as common as may be a cell phone in hand.

It seems more like a marketing strategy of commercial businesses . What do they sell– healthy, pristine waters right from the glaciers, healthy active people gulping down water from the bottle.

Why Do We Need Bottled Water?

I know, safety is the first issue that comes to your mind. We just fail to trust out local tap water. Until you read this:

According to WHO the only difference between bottled water and tap water is that it is made available in PET(polyethylene terephthalate) bottles and not through pipes.

A four year long study by Natural Resources Defense Council showed that on testing thousand bottles sold in the United States, about one fifth contained deadly chemicals such as toluene, xylene, or styrene–known or possible carcinogens and neurotoxins…

Michelle Obama- Style, Sense and Perseverance

The first Lady of United States of America, Michelle Obama has captivated the world with her style. She is the unexpected style icon in the White House in the recent history. Not only because she is chic, she has a real elegance to her way of style. She exudes a sense of great comfort, ease and has brought a whole new meaning to power dressing.

A statuesque woman is often becoming the target of friendly criticism. Each piece that she wears is dissected and where people are wanting her to dress up representing the best in American fashion, comparing her to Jacqueline Kennedy, Mrs Obama has chosen her own authentic style and is sticking to it.

Her wardrobe, ranges comfortably from the preppy accessibility of J Crew and Gap to expensive designers such as America's young Thakoon and the well-established Narciso Rodriguez. She embraces bright color, jazzy patterns, difficult bows and crystalline sparkles. Her choice of designers are different, away from the big names of American fashion such as Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, she champions the younger race-- Jason Wu, Isabel Toledo, Michael Kors, Sophie Theallet, Tracy Reese, Azzedine Alaïa .

Toms Shoes-One For One

A few days back, I was sitting in my chaise lounge, enjoying my slumber. Suddenly an AT&T ad caught my attention. Now I hardly like American ad sense, but this one was really good. I saw a young man rushing through a crowd of young kids, giving them shoes and telling us about how AT&T has helped him. At first I thought it to be a gimmick. But then realized that it actually was Blake Mycoskie, the man founder of Toms(shoes for tomorrow).

In a chance visit to Argentina, where he wanted to rest and with his dear game of Golf. It was here that he met children who would walk nearly two miles in search of fresh water– bare foot, often causing illness and grotesque infections with risk of amputation. Besides the health implications, he learned that some of these kids were not allowed to go to school without shoes.

Wanting to help but concerned about the sustainability of starting a charity, he decided instead to start a for-profit shoe company that would match every pair of shoes sold with a pair given to a child in need. His new ambition was met. He wanted to create for the US market on the traditional Argentine alpargataa slip-on—in lightweight fabrics and vibrant colors and prints. All this without any experience of shoemaking or design.

Blake initially planned to give away 200 pair of shoes from his loft in Venice, CA to children in Argentina. As word spread around, LA boutiques such as Fred Segal and American Rag, started to stock up his shoes. Available at such retailers as Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom’s, Toms sold 10,000 pairs during its first year(2006) in business and donated the same number….

Kaminey- A Preview

Releasing: June 5

Written And Directed By: Vishal Bhardwaj

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Amol Gupte

Music: Vishal Bhardwaj

Vishal Bhardwaj’s next Kaminey is anything but commercial. A film about two identical twins, it is journey of two brothers who don’t like each other and have nothing in common. And how things change and there life crosses a common crossroad.

Shahid Kapoor has been for long trying to get out of his chocolate boy image. For those of you who find Shahid irresistible you are in for a surprise. His character has a completely different image– hard hitting, raw, tough and completely devoid of any glamor! Look at his six pack abs and long hair that he has created specially for the movie.

Remember his movies like Vivah, Jab We Met, Kismat Konnections, he had that sweet boy next door look. Considering the fact that most top actors would love to work with Vishal Bhardwaj, Shahid is relatively newer in the industry (he has had only a handful of films so far)

Shahid will be in for a double role in Kaminey. He will play the role of the twins– Charlie and Guddu. As expected both are physically similar but very different in character– they hate each other. One stammers, uses slangs and other is a stutter. One is a typical lover boy and the other is the tough one. The twins want to leave the life of squalor and poverty behind and run away from home to find fortune. In their quest to get rich as quick, they meet a don. As in many a Hindi movie, Priyanka Chopra plays the sister of the don and she falls in love with one of the twins– Guddu the lover boy…
